Wilderness First Aid
Outdoor Skills & Wilderness First Aid at ONSC
The Ozark Natural Science Center offers several annual training series in partnership with Ozark Safety and Rescue Educators (www.OzarkSAR.com). These programs offer training and certifications through the Emergency Care and Safety Institute and meet standards of the Wilderness Medical Society for backcountry care. All ONSC staff participate in various levels of these training courses in order to offer outstanding responsiveness as we work with more than 4,000 school children annually.
The courses are appropriate for parents, educators, guides, outdoor enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in safety, first aid and preparedness in situations when traditional care may not be immediately available or accessible. Registration for each program includes classroom instruction, field rescue scenarios and course materials as well as all meals and accommodations in on-site lodges at the Ozark Natural Science Center.
Standard Wilderness First Aid
October 21 – 23, 2011
$249
This 24 hour course immerses participants in basic wilderness medicine procedures, preparing individuals to take immediate action when an outdoor adventure doesn’t go as planned and 911 responders are hours away. Time is split between interactive classroom sessions and hands-on field scenarios to prepare participants and help them quickly develop basic backcountry medical care skills. The course focus is on patient assessment, stabilization and emergency treatment of issues such as hypothermia and snakebites, as well as understanding of when and how to attempt evacuation. Participants will emerge capable of calmly responding to a wide variety of emergency scenarios. Participants arrive on Friday evening by 5:00 p.m. and the course will conclude after dinner on Sunday evening.
Advanced Wilderness First Aid
November 17 – 20, 2011
$425
This 40 hour course builds upon the basic frameworks of the prior course and includes advanced preparation in risk assessment, altitude illness, long-term wound care, improvisational methods, survival considerations and many more diverse scenarios. Standard Wilderness First Aid is helpful but is not a prerequisite. This course is particularly strong for group leaders, expedition participants, search and rescue personnel and outdoor enthusiasts wishing to further hone their preparedness skills. Parents, scout leaders and outdoor educators will also benefit from this course. Field exercises are designed to develop critical judgement skills that enable solid decision making when it really counts. Participants arrive and check in by 8:00 a.m. on Thursday morning and will conclude after dinner on Sunday evening.
Wilderness First Responder
December 15-21, 2011
$749
The intensive 100 hour Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course is designed to provide outdoor professionals such as rangers, guides, outdoor educators and search and rescue personnel with the skills to manage complex medical challenges in the backcountry. While this certification is required for many outdoor professions, it is also popular for backpackers, cavers, paddlers and individuals who live or work in remote areas. Instructors possess many years of hands-on professional backcountry medical and rescue experience. The course is mentally and physically challenging and focuses on trauma as well as long-term management of sickness and serious health problems when quick evacuation and outside help are not available. The course blends hands-on medical training, lecture, discussion and field scenarios to create an unmatched learning experience. Wilderness First Aid is encouraged prior to enrollment.
